The Canon EOS 80D is the latest iteration of Canon’s APS-C-chipped DSLRs that began with the introduction of the (no kidding) three-megapixel Canon EOS D30 in 2000. I’ve owned and shot with every camera in this series through the Canon EOS 60D. I so dearly loved my Canon EOS 50D, now converted to infrared-only operation, that I couldn’t imagine anything better, at least until I got the Canon EOS 60D. What happened to the Canon EOS 70D? I guess I must have missed that one. No matter, I was eager to put the Canon EOS 80D to work because of the specs and features it offered.

When I checked Canon’s website to verify the specs on the Canon EOS 6D Mark II ($1,899, body only; $3,099, for the test camera supplied with the Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM “kit” lens) I was a bit surprised to see it termed a “gateway” for enthusiasts to step up to a full-frame DSLR. That’s a new one to me, but that indeed is what this camera is. Packed with pro and enthusiast features alike, the Canon EOS 6D Mark II is a thoroughly modern DSLR that incorporates the latest technology and a navigational setup that makes moving through and selecting from its many options a breeze.

Canon’s workhorse, full-frame DSLR, the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV, offers a 30.4MP sensor system, while its forerunner used a 22.3MP sensor. The 30.4MP sensor in the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV offers Dual Pixel Raw images and updated Raw converter software, Digital Photo Professional 4. In addition, the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV’s sensor offers Dual Pixel CMOS AF, which first appeared in the Canon EOS 70D and is helpful when shooting in live view mode or when recording videos.

In their natural habitat, animals are as beautiful as they are elusive and uncooperative. We’d all love to go on safari in Africa, or archipelago-hopping in the Galapagos. Who doesn’t envy National Geographic photographers who travel the world to celebrate every living creature?
